Drum’n’bass culture sometimes brings us amazing music videos. We’d like to tell you about the most remarkable ones, and provide their possible explanation, or the stories told by the artists themselves. Today we are covering the videos from none other than Goldie!
Goldie – Temper Temper
You are probably still remembering this really weird and shocking video. During the whole short film, Goldie is breaking the figurines and glass bottles with his baseball bat, chasing some guy, and shouting out the lyrics. Another character is a white-dressed man, who is molesting the bypassers and whispering something to their ears. Among those who is starring in this video is Noel Gallagher (Oasis’ ex-member), who is playing the guitar riffs for this track. There are a plenty of other spectacular moments, but we’ll just let you watch…
One of YouTube users shared his own interpretation of the video:
I am not sure Goldie himself has aimed for some special meaning behind this. It really is all about living in the present driven by the impulses with no worries, lyrics are pretty much about that, even the energetic music hints to that. <…> I would say he is indeed pissed off and decided to capture the moment.
Goldie – Mother
Up next we have a really frightening video for another track taken from the Saturnz Return album. It is well known that Clifford’s family were not really careful for him, but after many years since he got taken away by social workers, he started to love his mom. Goldie recorded the track Mother (which is originally one hour long !), to express his feeling towards his mom.
the dirt on him is the filth that sticks to you after a traumatic childhood and defines your adulthood. the characters in white represent the foster parents and situations he faced growing up. the man showing his “meat” screaming “i am your father” and the wife yelling “shut up” references his memories. the old white lady represents the the mother that gave him up and he never knew. the images represent things that should have been shielded from him by his mother…but never did
Goldie – Inner City Life
Inner City Life is still considered a dnb classic, thanks to not only its innovative sound, but also to the wonderful voice of Diane Charlemagne. This video is about the 90’s life in so-called inner cities, which are meant to be British cities’ central districts that had to deal with serious social and economic problems.
This track defines a generation, a moment in time, a scene, a way of life. It is a part of British culture. Just simply sums up everything about a period.
Really tells what inner city England life struggle. I was evicted, a I was moved to Thamesmead London in social class poverty. Listen to this song for time now way back from 1995 at least. Yeah it’s hard living in Thamesmead. Goldie gave me the energy to pursue life out of the ghetto.
Goldie – Freedom
Video for Freedom is a more recent work of Clifford. And it convinces us that even in his 50s this artist is the same eccentric as ever. The video itself was intended to be an illustration of Goldie’s life: the protagonist gets stuck in a long dark corridor, but manages to get away by breaking through a brick wall. Then, he dives into the sea and “washes away” his past; finally, he unfolds bees in his hand – for Goldie, it’s the ultimate symbol of freedom. You can find out more about the making of the video in the interview with Joe Elliott, a co-director of Freedom.
